A HOSPITAL-BASED RETROSPECTIVE OBSERVATIONAL STUDY ON AWARENESS OF SIDDHA TREATMENT IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ANORECTAL DISEASES

Introduction: The Siddha system of medicine, one of India’s traditional systems of medicine, adopts a holistic approach through internal and external medicines, surgical, and para-surgical procedures. Despite the availability of Siddha therapies, awareness about Siddha treatment among patients varies.
Methods: This hospital-based retrospective observational study was conducted at the National Institute of Siddha (NIS) after the approval of the Institutional Ethical Committee. Medical records of the patients diagnosed with anorectal diseases during the study period were reviewed retrospectively. Awareness and health-seeking behaviour were obtained through an interview using a structured questionnaire. A total of 170 patients aged 20–60 years were included in this study.
Results: Among the 170 patients, 73% were male, and 27% were female. Haemorrhoids (47%) were the most common anorectal condition, followed by Fistula (32%) and fissure (11%). The majority of patients reported that they were aware of Siddha treatment through previously treated patients. Most of them expressed their satisfaction and willingness to recommend Siddha treatment.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that a good level of awareness and positive opinion of Siddha treatment among patients with anorectal diseases. Further studies are required to evaluate treatment outcomes and long-term benefits.
