Garbhasanskar is a contemporary term associated with prenatal nurturing and the traditional Ayurvedic understanding of influences on fetal development. Its conceptual foundations are closely related to Garbhavakranti, Garbhini Paricharya, maternal diet and lifestyle, mental well-being, and the importance of the intrauterine environment described in classical Ayurvedic literature. The aim of this review is to examine Garbhasanskar from the Ayurvedic perspective, elucidate its philosophical and classical foundations, and critically discuss its relevance in the context of contemporary maternal and developmental science. This narrative review examines selected classical Ayurvedic texts, including the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, alongside published literature concerning Ayurvedic antenatal care, maternal influences on fetal development and contemporary antenatal health. The interpretation distinguishes classical descriptions from hypotheses requiring modern scientific validation. Ayurveda considers conception and fetal development to be influenced by multiple factors, including reproductive health, maternal nourishment, lifestyle, psychological state and the intrauterine environment. Garbhini Paricharya provides an important traditional framework for understanding maternal care throughout pregnancy. Garbhasanskar, as understood in contemporary practice, draws upon these principles to emphasize positive maternal experiences, appropriate nourishment, mental well-being and a supportive environment. Some of these themes are consistent with contemporary recognition of maternal nutrition, psychosocial well-being and environmental influences on development. However, direct evidence establishing the effectiveness of comprehensive Garbhasanskar practices in determining fetal intelligence, personality or long-term health remains insufficient. Garbhasanskar represents a culturally significant concept within contemporary interpretations of Ayurvedic prenatal care. Its scientific appraisal requires careful textual interpretation, distinction between traditional concepts and experimentally established mechanisms, and rigorous clinical investigation. A balanced understanding may contribute to scholarly dialogue between Ayurveda and contemporary maternal health sciences without overstating established evidence.
