UNDERSTANDING AGNIMANDYA IN CHILDREN (5–12 YEARS): AN AYURVEDIC CONCEPTUAL REVIEW

Background Agnimandya is a pathological condition characterized by diminished functional capacity of Agni, resulting in impaired digestion, defective metabolism, incomplete transformation of food, and formation of Ama. In children aged 5–12 years, proper digestive function is essential for optimum growth, tissue nourishment, cognitive development, immunity, and maintenance of health. Childhood is considered a Kapha-predominant stage of life, during which physiological growth is rapid but digestive capacity remains comparatively delicate. Understanding the concept of Agnimandya in children from both classical and contemporary perspectives is therefore important for preventive healthcare and promotion of healthy childhood development. Aim To review the concept of Agnimandya in children (5–12 years) from classical Ayurvedic literature and correlate it with modern pediatric concepts. Objectives To understand the concept of Agnimandya in children. To review its causes, pathogenesis, clinical features, and complications according to Ayurveda. To correlate classical concepts with modern pediatric digestive disorders. Materials and Methods This conceptual review was prepared through an extensive review of classical Ayurvedic texts, standard commentaries, peer-reviewed journals, pediatric textbooks, and published scientific literature. Relevant information was collected, compiled, analyzed, and presented descriptively. Results & Discussion The classical concept of Agnimandya shows remarkable similarity with modern understanding of impaired digestion, appetite disorders, and nutritional imbalance. Preservation of healthy Agni through appropriate diet and lifestyle may improve childhood growth and overall health. Conclusion Agnimandya represents the fundamental pathological process affecting digestion, metabolism, and nutrition in children. Early identification and correction of impaired digestive function may contribute significantly to healthy growth and disease prevention.
