A CONCEPTUAL STUDY ON THE FUNCTION OF VATA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO NEUROLOGICAL FUNCTION AND ITS EXPRESSION IN VATAJ PRAKRITI PURUSHA (A SAMIKSHA ADHYAYANA)

Abstract

Vata is regarded in Ayurveda as the foremost of the three Dosha, the motive force (Prerak) behind every somatic and psychic event in the body. Classical texts credit it with initiating movement, governing the mind (Manas), coordinating the sense organs (Indriya), enabling speech, and sustaining Ayu (life span) itself1,2. A large proportion of these described functions — perception, cognition, motor initiation, reflex activity, autonomic regulation and homeostasis — overlap closely with functions attributed by modern biomedical science to the nervous system, particularly the central, peripheral and autonomic divisions3,4,5. This paper is a purely conceptual (Samiksha) study, based on classical Ayurvedic literature (Brihatrayi and allied Samhita) and contemporary peer-reviewed literature, undertaken to critically examine the functional correlation between Vata Dosha — in particular its five sub-types (Pancha Vata) — and neurological activity, and to describe how the Manasika and Sharirika traits of Vataj Prakriti Purusha mirror recognisable neuro-psychological and autonomic patterns. The review suggests that Prana, Udana, Samana, Vyana and Apana Vata can be reasonably correlated with, respectively, central neural integration, motor–speech pathways, the enteric nervous system, generalized reflex/circulatory activity, and pelvic autonomic (parasympathetic) outflow6,7,10, and that the restless, quick, variable Manasika Bhava of Vataj Prakriti individuals parallel a heightened, labile pattern of neural and autonomic reactivity described in contemporary personality-physiology research16,17,22. Such conceptual bridging does not equate the two systems but offers a translational vocabulary useful for research methodology, clinical reasoning in Vata-predominant (Vata Vyadhi) neurological disorders, and Prakriti-based personalised care.
