AYURVEDA -BOON FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS W.S.R. TO ASTHI MAJJAGATAVATA: A CASE STUDY

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune inflammatory demyelinatingdisease of the central nervous system, in which the insulting covers of nerve cells in the brainand spinal cord are damaged affecting over 2.3 million people worldwide. According to theNational Institute of neurological disorders and Stroke, most frequently occurring cause ofnon- traumatic neurologic disability and the age of disease onset is typically between 20 and40 years, with a higher incidence in women. Individuals with MS experience a wide range ofsymptoms, including declining physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms (e.g.,fatigue, imbalance, spasticity, chronic pain, cognitive impairment, bladder and boweldysfunction, visual and speech impairments, depression, sensory disturbance, and mobilityimpairment).To date, both thecauseof and curefor MS remain unknown. Immunosuppressant or cortico-steroids as only available treatment in conventional science,Ayurveda only the ray of hope. In Ayurveda, multiple Sclerosis candiagnosed case of first degree demyelination multiple sclerosis (kurtzke disability grade V), had been given Ayurvedic management shown encouraging results.

Aim :

A case study had been done to find effective management for MS. A 24 years old female patient came to Ayurved OPD, AIIMS, Raipur with complaints of electric-shock like sensations, weakness, numbness and burning sensation in both arms and legs along with numbness in abdominal region and lack of coordination since three years. She was diagnosed case of first degree demyelination multiple sclerosis (kurtzke disability grade V), had been given Ayurvedic management shown encouraging results.

Conclusion:

Patient was observed for symptomatic improvement, based assessment done by questionnaire, also observed for clinical examination. Patient was also observed for complication during whole course of treatment, untoward complications were not seen. Conservative management of MS through Ayurvedic principles improving the quality of life and decrease dependency of patient.

Result:

Patient showed improvement kurtzke disability grade five to grade two
